Dance For Fitness At Home

I am so happy that now we have so much access to dance classes online so we can just dance like nobody’s watching at home. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for dancing ever since I took my first ballet class in first grade. dance for fitness I am so inspired by the women in our community who come in and give it their all. They’re honest about their good days and their bad days and we all can relate to that. I love seeing all the wins in our community and I want to share the journeys of 3 special ladies. These women chose to dance for fitness because other forms of exercise wasn’t cutting it for them. Fitness should be fun and it should be inclusive too. They’re here to remind you that you can have fun and reach your goals at the same time.

What inspired you to start your health journey?

I didn’t feel well in my skin for quite a while, I didn’t feel like me any more with all the weight I gained over the last years. So I’ve been thinking about losing weight and focusing on my health for at least a few months, but I got serious for 2 reasons:
  • A good friend started to go swimming at least 3 times a week to lose weight. She has 3 kids, one of them with special needs, and works night shifts. That gave me a serious kick in the butt. I thought: If she with her busy schedule can make time for working out, there’s no excuse for me why I can’t. This was my initial motivation.
  • I stumbled upon a small book, named “Losing weight starts in your head“. It was written by 2 neuroscientists, who explained how they used their knowledge on the human brain to lose weight (…and to eat healthier). As I’m a science girl, I devoured the book. And learned: If you want success, take baby steps and change one habit at a time. Otherwise your brain will sabotage you. And this was my first step to a sustainable weight loss plan.

What’s your favorite dance fitness workout?

The thing I truly love on hip shake fitness is the variety of styles. And I usually follow the pre-planned schedules – one thing less to think about, just dance through the workout of the day. But I do love some styles more than others. The Bollywood Abs program instantly makes me feel like a gracious bellydancer, after a Strong and Sexy workout I feel exactly that way, and Tone n Twerk is my choice, when I need something to cheer me up – shaking my booty like Beyonce always makes me laugh about myself.

What inspired you to start your health journey?

I’ve always had problems with my weight since I can remember. I got the overweight gene from my dad’s side and started to be slightly chunky at the age of 12 when I remember I started my first diet. From then it’s been a continuous yo-yoing, but I really never got to my healthy form. Starting from my late 20’s/early 30’s my physical health went on a downfall, with major anxiety, body dysphoria and two separate eras of eating disorder (binge eating) that I was able to get under control thanks to therapy. Then it all went somewhat normal for a while, I still had body issues but I was kind of okay with what I had as I had learned to accept myself.

How do you motivate yourself to workout?

It’s funny because for the first time in my life I don’t have the “guilty” mentality anymore. I am at a place where I am not “on a diet” or “working out to lose weight”. I, for the very first time in my life, lead a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. This is the major motivator for me, I don’t need to do it because “I have to” anymore, I do it because it’s good for me and I know that it’s all part of a process, and I know I’ll feel better after working out, because of the endorphins kicking in and because it’s been another tile on the 1000 pieces “better me” puzzle.

What inspired you to start your health journey?

I was not liking what I saw in the mirror and I hated how heavy my steps were when walking. I decided it was time for a change. We live far away from gyms (5 hours round trip) and have hectic everyday lives and I knew I would find it difficult to commit to going to the gym or join any physical group classes. To add to, we have 300 plus rain days a year where we live, and so I knew starting running wouldn’t be very appealing either in the autumn storms or winter darkness.

How has HSF been helpful to your dance fitness journey?

I love that HSF has a set week program that I can choose to follow. By doing that I get a ready thought through combination of cardio and strength training with leg and arm days. This way I have also found new workouts to love that I perhaps initially wouldn’t have thought of trying. The support of the community also really helps in keeping the motivation up and going especially in the beginning. Oh, and the recipes! Charlene, the founder, is always cooking up new things and thinking of new ways of keeping us fit and healthy (and happy!)
