Let’s Groove To These Old School Hip Hop Moves

I grew up in the 80’s so MTV was in full swing and all the choreo of the music videos were amazing. We got a new hip hop dance moves that we obsessed over at least once a month. We’ll go through some of those classic moves below. I think I’m most excited to do the Humpty Dance and the Snake so I’m going to practice those as my warm up. Ashley is our Old School Hip Hop dance instructor so you’re in good hands. She’ll also teach you how to combine all these moves together so you’re ready for your next dance party. Ashley will be teaching us some of her favorite Old School Hip Hop moves in a 30 minute class. If you need to get a written breakdown of the moves you’ll be learning, you’ll find it under the video.

Hip Hop Dance Move Breakdown

The Big Daddy Kane

Now, let’s move on to the first dance move called the Big Daddy Kane. Start by lifting your knee up and down, focusing on engaging your core. As you lift your knee, imagine you’re trying to get someone’s attention in front of you and snap your arm across your body. This move is all about attitude and sass, so have fun with it! Once you’ve got the hang of it, let’s speed it up a bit and add some style. Snap your arm across your body with even more flair and confidence. Don’t forget to keep your core engaged and lift those knees high. Feel the rhythm and let your body groove to the music! And if you’re feeling up for it, add a little hop in between each snap. This will give the move an extra kick and make you feel like you’re truly owning the dance floor. Keep that energy up, and you’ll be rocking the Big Daddy Cane like a pro!

The Cabbage Patch

Now, let’s move on to the next dance move called the Cabbage Patch. This move is all about walking it out and getting into the groove. As you walk, lean from side to side, adding some swagger to your steps. Feel free to make a face or have some fun with it! To add some flair to the Cabbage Patch, bring your arms up and start stirring them in a circular motion in front of you. Imagine you’re stirring a pot of stew and really engage those arms. This circular motion will help warm up your upper body and get you ready for more moves.

Booty Pop & Hip Roll

Let’s move on to the next dance move called the Booty Pop and Hip Roll. This move is all about shaking what your mama and daddy gave you! Start by getting into a squat position and arching your back. Pop that booty out and then crunch your abs in as you bring your hips in. This move is not only fun but also a great workout for your abs and thighs! As you get the hang of the Booty Pop, let’s add a hip roll to really amp up the groove. Pretend you have a paintbrush on your hips and paint all four corners of the wall. Circle those hips and work those lower abs. Feel the burn and keep the energy up!

The Butterfly

Get into a squat position and bring your feet in and out. You want to make sure you’re really working those thighs, so go as low as you can. Add some arm movement by bringing your arms in and out in sync with your feet. Feel the burn and embrace the groove! As you get more comfortable with the Butterfly, try taking it even lower and really work that booty and those thighs. The lower you go, the more you’ll feel the burn and the more effective the move will be!

Snake It

Next, let’s move on to the Snake. This move is all about moving your head and shoulders from left to right. Lean as much as you can with your shoulders and head, and eventually, try to incorporate your chest and obliques as well. Really work that core and have fun with it! As you get more comfortable with the Snake, speed it up and really embrace the rhythm. Lean from side to side and let your body flow with the music. This move will help you work those sides and give your abs a great workout!

Get Down with the Humpty Dance

Now, let’s move on to the Humpty Dance. This move has two variations, so pick the one that suits you best. The first variation is a single-leg stomp, where you stomp your foot to the beat. The second variation is a double-leg stomp, where you cross your feet and jump. For the single-leg stomp, stomp your foot to the beat and really emphasize the movement. Feel the rhythm and add some shoulder action to really bring the move to life. This move is all about having fun and letting loose! If you’re up for the challenge, try the double-leg stomp. Cross your feet and jump, really getting into the groove. Let the music guide your movements and have a blast on the dance floor!

Every Little Step

Once you’ve mastered these moves, let’s finish off with the Every Little Step. Slide your feet from right to left and bring your arms across your body. When you get to the middle, you’re going to bring your arms up parallel in front of your face. Then repeat the first step. This move will target your arms and help tone them too. Get into the rhythm and really let loose! Remember, these dance moves are just the beginning. Keep practicing, exploring, and embracing the joy of dance. Whether you’re dancing alone in your room or busting a move at a party, let the music guide you and dance like nobody’s watching!
